ABOUT THE CLINICIAN

Susan E. Harris is an international teacher, clinician, and author. She has taught, trained, coached and competed in hunters, jumpers, dressage, equitation, eventing, western pleasure & performance, saddle seat, and the pleasure and versatility breeds.

A Senior Centered Riding Instructor, Susan apprenticed with Sally Swift. She teaches clinics in Centered Riding and in Horse Gaits, Balance &Movement across the USA and around the world. She is a popular speaker at major equestrian expositions, including Equitana USA, Equitana Asia Pacific, the AQHA Quarter Horse Congress and others.

Susan is the author and illustrator of Horse Gaits, Balance & Movement, Grooming to Win, the US Pony Club Manuals of Horsemanship, and the USPC Guides to Longeing, Bandaging, and Conformation. With Peggy Brown, she produced the videotapes "Anatomy in Motion™: The Visible Horse and The Visible Rider

Susan tries to make her clinics a pleasant and positive learning experience for riders, horses and spectators, and to help riders discover their own road to success and fulfillment in horsemanship. Her teaching style is clear, practical and positive, often illustrating a point with an on-the-spot drawing. Susan’s goals are to promote better understanding of horse and rider balance and movement in riding, training, and competition, and to help riders ride, train, and work with confidence and harmony with their horses.

 

TYPES OF CLINICS AVAILABLE

 

  • Open Centered Riding Clinics     

Clinics are normally 3 days ( 2 days minimum).      All clinics include introductory lecture, daily groundwork sessions, balance and body awareness work and riding in small groups.

Open Centered Riding Clinics are suitable for adult and junior riders of all levels, riding Interests, and disciplines, with riders placed in appropriate groups for their age, skill level and discipline. Clinics may be open to all disciplines, or may be specialized  for a particular discipline or group (Dressage, Hunter Seat, Western, Pony Club, etc.).

Open Centered Riding Clinics may include classes in :

     Introductory Centered Riding

  • For those riding in their first Centered Riding Clinic. Introduces Centered Riding concepts and how to apply basic Centered Riding Techniques in your own riding. Classes adapted to riders' experience, skill levels, and riding interests.

  •     Continuing Centered Riding

  • For those already experienced in Centered Riding, who have ridden in one or more Centered Riding Clinics or who work with a Centered Riding Instructor. More advanced Centered Riding techniques tailored to the participants' riding interests, skill levels, and experience in Centered Riding.

    Both Introductory and Continuing Centered Riding Classes may be offered in the same clinic.

      

    • Centered Jumping Clinics

    (3 days) Centered Riding basics, groundwork, balance &  awareness techniques, and how they apply to jumping. Introductory lecture and daily Groundwork sessions included. An Introductory Centered Riding Clinic is recommended first .

              Typical Centered Jumping Clinic Schedule:

            Day 1: Centered Riding basics on the flat

            Day 2: Centered Riding techniques applied to
                          cavaletti and gymnastic jumping

            Day 3: Centered Riding over fences (jumping
                          level appropriate for riders’ experience)

    (2 or 3 days)   Learn to recognize and improve the elements of good movement and performance. See, feel and understand the walk, trot, canter, gallop, and in some clinics, the unique gaits of the gaited breeds,  jumping, or driving.  Learn how conformation, riding and training affect the horse's balance and movement, and discover what you can do to get the best movement from the horse you ride, with individual analysis  of  horses. All breeds and disciplines welcome; clinics can be adapted to any level or riding interest. 

    This clinic includes the "Living Anatomy" Visible Horse demo, in which a live horse is painted with the skeletal and muscular systems. This clinic may  be combined with a Centered Riding Clinic, or  Peggy Brown's Visible Rider demo and her expertise in Centered Driving are options that may be available . 

    This clinic may also be offered in combination with other experts in fields that affect performance, such as saddle fitting,  massage, veterinary chiropractics, dentistry, etc. 

     

    Typical Schedule for Horse Gaits, Balance & Movement Clinics

    Day 1:  Visible Horse demo and individual horse
                   gaits, balance & movement analysis

    Day 2:  Riding sessions; exercises to improve
                  balance & movement; discussion

    Day 3:  Riding sessions, discussion & evaluation

     

     

      Pony Club and Other Clinics

    Clinics in Dressage, Jumping, Teaching, Cross-Country, Western, Saddle Seat or other themes can be arranged for Pony Clubs, Adult Riding Clubs, or other groups. Please contact Susan Harris to discuss your group's needs.

     

     

    • Expos, Workshops and Speaking Engagements

    Susan Harris is available for demonstrations, illustrated lectures, and workshops on Horse Gaits, Balance and Movement, Centered Riding, Teaching, and other topics for equestrian expos and other events. She has presented at regional, national and international expos, including EquineAffaire, the Quarter Horse Congress, Equitana USA and Equitana Asia/Pacific (Australia),  BEA/Pferde (Swiss Spring Agricultural Show), Equi-Style Event (Belgium), and has been a keynote speaker for the US Pony Club National Convention, NAHRA, American Youth Horse Council, and many other organizations.

    Susan Harris’ famous "Living Anatomy" demonstration, as seen at Equitana USA and other equestrian events, in which she paints the muscles and skeletal system on a horse, which is longed to demonstrate anatomy in movement. The demo runs approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours (requires 4 hours preparation time to paint the horse). This presentation may be added to any clinic as an extra clinic day. Clinic organizer must supply a white or light grey horse that can be longed at walk, trot & canter and will stand quietly for the demo. Due to Susan Harris’ 2 day minimum requirement, the Visible Horse Demo is not available as a one-day program by itself.

    Centered Riding Instructor Course         

    For instructors in any discipline who wish to learn to use Centered Riding techniques in their teaching, and to qualify as Centered Riding Instructors. Participating Instructors must be experienced riding teachers who have ridden in at least one Open Centered Riding Clinic. 6 to 12 Participating Instructors accepted, plus a limited number of Student Riders (any level, need not be instructors).

    A Centered Riding Instructor Course requires 7 days in 2 parts:

    Part One (3 days) includes daily riding, groundwork lessons, mounted bodywork, lectures and an introduction to teaching Centered Riding. Each lesson for Participating Instructors is a teaching demo as well as a practical riding experience. Student riders may audit but do not ride in Part 1.

    After Part 1, Participating Instructors practice what they have learned in  their riding, teaching and training for several weeks.

    In Part Two (4 days), 6 to 8 weeks later, the Participating Instructors return to share their experiences and discoveries, review the basics learned in Part One, develop further Centered Riding techniques in their riding and groundwork, and do supervised practice teaching with Student Riders. Instructors who successfully complete the CRI Instructor Course qualify as Level I Centered Riding Instructors.

    Student riders (any level; need not be instructors) may audit and participate in groundwork, as well as taking Centered Riding lessons with Participating Instructors (under supervision of the Clinic Instructors) during Part 2. This is an excellent opportunity for an intensive Centered Riding learning experience, or for a Participating Instructor to bring a student with them.

     

    Centered Riding Instructor Update Clinic  

    (4 days)  Updates Centered Riding Instructors with continuing education for advancement in Centered Riding. Participating Instructors must be qualified as Centered Riding Instructors and must pay current year dues to Centered Riding, Inc. Includes riding, groundwork, bodywork, and practice teaching, with more advanced Centered Riding techniques adapted to various disciplines.

    Student riders (who need not be instructors) may audit and participate in groundwork, as well as taking Centered Riding lessons with Participating Instructors. This is an excellent opportunity for an intensive Centered Riding learning experience.
